What are the parts of speech? The parts of speech are the building blocks of English. Knowing them helps you write and speak clearly and correctly!

There are 8 main parts of speech in English.

The 8 Parts of Speech

  • Noun: A person, place, thing, or idea.
  • Pronoun: A word that replaces a noun.
  • Verb: An action or state of being.
  • Adjective: A word that describes a noun or pronoun.
  • Adverb: A word that describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb.
  • Preposition: A word that shows the relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and another word.
  • Conjunction: A word that connects words, phrases, or clauses.
  • Interjection: A word that expresses emotion or surprise.
